Brew Smart: Solutions for the Small & Growing Brewery
Waterline Brewing Company, Wilmington, NC
February 27th – 28th

Designed especially for our state’s small and growing breweries, this Guild educational seminar will give breweries of many different shapes and sizes, including breweries-in-planning, much to learn and consider. The event will also include a mini trade show on both days, and all tickets include a networking dinner at Front Street Brewery and after-dinner social sponsored by the Cape Fear Craft Beer Alliance.

Monday, Feb. 27th:

12:00pm – Check-in Open

1:00pm – Using Your Department of Agriculture: Key Resources & Support
Speaker: John Hammond, North Carolina Department of Agriculture
Description: Agriculture and agribusiness, including food, forestry and fiber, contributes $84 billion to the state’s economy. The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has a wide variety of programs and services to help a wide variety of businesses. We work to promote NC products to our neighbors and the world.

2:00pm – Consistency in the Brewhouse: Understanding Mashing Biochemistry
Speaker: Todd Isbell, Liberty Brewery & Grill
Description: Proper pH, clarity, and the reasons and biomechanics behind various mashing enzymes, including sparging operations

3:00pm – Making the Most of Your Brewery’s Retail Sales Privileges: When, Where, and How
Speaker: Laura Collier, Strike & Techel Beverage Law
Description: Robust retail sales are a key component of a successful small and growing brewery. Learn how to legally make the most of your brewery’s retail sales privileges to make profitable and positive connections with consumers. This session will outline the laws allowing sales in taprooms, additional retail locations, and at special events, provide guidance on promotional regulations, and discuss a brewery’s ability to engage in shipping and delivery.
4:00pm – Making the Most of Bottle Releases Panel Discussion
Speakers: Jamie Bartholomaus, Foothills Brewing Co.; Ben Woodward, Haw River Farmhouse Ales; & Steve Lyerly, Olde Hickory Brewery
Description: Want to grow excitement and demand for your next taproom bottle release? This session will provide the opportunity to ask questions and get advice for your next bottle release.
5:00pm – What Lenders Look For
Speaker: Kate Smith, Live Oak Bank
Description: Find out the inside scoop for financing your growing brewery.

Description: Find out the ins and outs of self-distributing and working with a wholesaler partner from an experienced source
10:00am – A Commercial Roadmap for Expansion
Speaker: Joel Hueston, First Key Consulting, Inc.
Description:Is your brewery experiencing growing pains? It is important to challenge your go-to-market strategies in order to remain viable in an evolving local market. This includes foundational elements such as branding, distribution, packaging, channel strategies, beer styles, price points, social media platforms, and the on-site (taproom) experience.
11:00am – Getting Ink: How to Build Professional Relationships with the Media
Speaker: Jason Frye, Freelance Writer and Lauren Frye, Gillies Zaiser Public Relations
Description: Hear from an experienced writer and a PR pro on how to pitch your story (and what not to do)

Conference participants are eligible to register for a small table in the mini trade show, happening on both days.**Due to the cozy nature of this event, registration for the trade show will be limited and will be managed on a first-come, first-serve basis, with gold members receiving preference. Participants are asked not to bring large displays.
